PERFORMING ensembles The Music & Guard Program at John North High School is part of a comprehensive music performing arts program. Established in 1963, the program offers students performing opportunities in theater, choir, band, percussion arts, guard, dance, and International Baccalaureate music appreciation. The instrumental program consists three concert bands, percussion studio, jazz band, color guard, winter guard, winter drum line, the Measure B Project (pep band), and the Blue Star Regiment marching band. |

Blue Star Regiment Enrollment 100+ The Blue Star Regiment (BSR) is the name of the well known marching band at John North HS. The BSR has traveled extensively throughout its history, and performed at numerous prestigious events. The BSR has marched in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, the Portland Rose Festival Parade, Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, the Fiesta Bowl Tournament of Bands (twice), and traveled to England, Spain, France, China (three times), Australia, and Japan. |

BSR Color Guard Enrollment: 20+ The color guard section of the Blue Star Regiment are highly successful and artistic performers. The audition for this ensemble is held one time each year after spring break. Members perform as part of the Blue Star Regiment, and in winter/spring dance and winter guard competitions. |

Symphonic Band Enrollment: 65 Combining students from 3rd and 4th periods and percussion from 5h period, this is an intermediate ensemble designed to enhance students’ fundamental skills and develop high school proficient level music standards. Grade 3 and 4 literature is a staple of this band. Performances include concerts and the SCSBOA music festival. |

Wind Symphony Enrollment: 30 The most advanced band offered, the Wind Symphony performs advanced literature and offers a college level experience. Members are expected to have a high level of musicianship and advance skill on their instrument. Percussionists are chosen to perform with this band from the 5th period advanced ensemble. This ensemble has more performances throughout the year that the other concert ensembles. |

Percussion Studio Enrollment: 20 The 5th period class is dedicated entirely to the percussive arts. In the fall, the class is part of the Blue Star Regiment battery and front ensemble, and then members are placed into various ensembles throughout the rest of the year. Students take master classes on various percussion implements, including mallet, battery and drum set. Winter indoor percussion is also a focus of this class in the second semester. |

Winter Guard Enrollment: 20+ This class prepares students for the indoor competition season, and team members are selected from the Blue Star Regiment’s fall membership. Students perform in venues around southern California beginning in February. The season culminates with USA Nationals and/or WGASC Championships. |

BSR Indoor Drum Line Enrollment: 15+ This is an advanced indoor marching ensemble open to students by audition. Members are selected from the Blue Star Regiment’s fall membership. Students perform an indoor marching show at venues around southern California beginning in February. The season culminates with a performance at the ADLA or CSBC Championships in April. |

Jazz Band Enrollment: 23 The Jazz Ensemble is open to students by audition. A standard instrumentation is chosen to form the ensemble from members in the band program. Students must be concurrently enrolled in a concert band class. |

Measure B Project This ensemble is the ultimate in pep bands, performing music from every style, such as funk, pop, jazz, Latin, rock, hip-hop, etc. Students chosen for this group are the most senior members, section leaders, and participants in basketball band. Participation in both the Basketball Band and the BSR is required for all members. The ensemble is mostly student driven, and the members determine rehearsal times. The group performs at local events, as well as selected basketball and volleyball games, and other events throughout the school and community. The demands on band members in this ensemble are high, however the rewards far surpass any other experience . |
